Likes do not equal bucks

The more people who like your Facebook page, the more people who will see what you’re posting and become aware what your business offers. Sounds good – but it’s wrong. This misconception is causing many small business owners to waste a lot of time and money.

Here’s why you shouldn’t focus on page likes.

Hands up if you’ve been guilty of getting sucked into the Facebook prompt to run a campaign to get “more likes” for your business page?

Build as big an audience as possible – sounds like a great idea, right?

It may come as a surprise to you that having a lots of people who like your Facebook page is not as beneficial as it once was. It’s become increasingly difficult to acquire new fans for your Facebook page, and it’s also become more difficult to reach those fans.

Recent statistics suggest that your organic posts will typically only be seen by approximately 5% of the people who’ve liked your page. If you have 500 followers, only 25 people might actually see your post.

This is the reason why we encourage small business owners not to fall into the trap of running campaigns for “page likes”. Such a strategy could mean you pay for people to like your page, and then pay AGAIN for boosted posts so those people actually get to see your content. Many businesses waste a lot of money with this strategy.

So, what to do? How do you improve your Facebook exposure and get more people to see your posts?

Shift your focus: Embrace Facebook Advertising

Stop focusing on page likes. Instead use Facebook advertising strategies to increase traffic to your website, or to increase engagement with your brand.

Facebook is no longer a free marketing channel. It is the reality that Facebook is now “pay to play”.  As much as you may not want to pay Facebook a cent, think of it just like any other business marketing expense. After all, Facebook ads are cheaper than television or radio advertising.

There is a common misconception that we constantly come up against is the idea that ‘Facebook is free’. Well, yes, it is free to have a Facebook business page. But if you’re wanting people to see it and interact with it, you’re not going to have much luck without at least a small advertising budget.

Create Facebook ads that target your customers and maximise your results. When Facebook advertising is used correctly, you could see big reach at relatively low cost.
